| A 50-YEAR-OLD EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION IN THE SERVICE OF FRENCH LOCAL AUTHORITIES |
• The AFCCRE is an association dating back from 1951 when it was created at the behest of a few local elected members headed by Jacques Chaban-Delmas and Gaston Defferre. Town twinning launched the movement after the Second World War but the AFCCRE progressively widened its activities to deal with all the European policies that might answer the demands of French local authorities.
• The AFCCRE includes today nearly 2000 local authorities, municipalities, départements, regions and districts. The President of the association is Louis LE PENSEC, a former minister and now a member of the French Senate and the Vice-president of the French department council of Finistère.
• The AFCCRE is the French section of the Council for European Municipalities and Regions, a European organisation gathering more than 100,000 local authorities in Europe and directed by Michael HÄULP, the mayor and governor of Vienna.
Furthermore the AFCCRE is a member of the world organisation of local authorities, the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) that was founded by the Congress of Paris in May 2004.
• The General Secretary of the AFCCRE is based in Orléans. 17 members are part of its permanent team.
The local authorities that are members of the AFCCRE pay an annual subscription on a pro rata basis of the number of their inhabitants and according to a scale established by the leading Committee of the association.
